After a sharp rebound this weekend, the U.S. equity markets could continue their success as long as the economic outlook continues to improve.

Friday's announcement of job cuts less than expected in August in the U.S., released after a few macroeconomic indicators better than expected the previous day, was enough to close markets for one week started with great fanfare in doubt.

Investors, who had not ruled out a relapse into recession in the U.S. economy, have apparently abandoned it, at least for the moment, this scenario.

The three major stock indices of U.S. markets have each won more than one percent Friday. For the week, the Standard & Poor's 500, who serves as a reference for fund managers, posted a gain of 3.8%, its best weekly performance for eight weeks.

In August, the S & P 500 was down 4.7% as investors fearing a recession in the fallout of the first world power.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 2.9% and the Nasdaq Composite 3.7%.It is for these two indices of their best week in the last six.

This week will not begin until Tuesday – the markets will be closed Monday for Labor Day – the macro-economic indicators likely to fuel the optimism of investors will be found few.

There will still be the weekly statistical applications for unemployment benefits – investors expect a mild recession – and the external trade statistics for the month of July. The deficit is expected to show a small decrease.

Some analysts said however that despite its rebound, the market is struggling to emerge from its band, between 1040 and 1130 points, the S & P 500.

"We are in bullish phase. But I do not see us reach new highs or break the target range, "said Alan Lancz, president of Alan B. Lancz & Associates in Ohio." We're staying in a market that is two steps forward a step back. "

Markets have perhaps begun in September, but investors should not forget that this month is generally the weakest of the year for stocks, according to the Almanac of the trader.

The S & P 500 declined on average by 0.7% in September since 1950. However, the day after Labor Day, the Dow rose 12 times over the past 15 years.

DSG International on Thursday reported quarterly sales in line with expectations, benefiting from strong demand for the iPad, the digital tablet from Apple, and televisions during the World Cup soccer.

The number two European distributor of consumer electronics has shown, however, worried about the economic outlook, even if he says well positioned.

The group's sales in its British stores open at least a year rose 3% during its first fiscal quarter ended July 24, while analysts were expecting growth of between 2% and 4%.

Gross margin for DSG, which owns the Currys and PC World chains in the United Kingdom, Italy UniEuro, Elkjøp in northern Europe and Kotsovolos in Greece rose 0.1%.

"Our business in the United Kingdom showed particularly good results, mainly with clients who responded to our major promotional campaign tied to World Cup," said DSG.

On a comparable basis, sales rose 6% in Great Britain and Ireland, where the group has gained market share, but remained stable in the Nordic countries.

DSG said that its program of upgrading its stores was underway, 200 outlets have already been modified in Great Britain.

At 8:20 GMT, DSG took 1.93%, while the Stoxx European retailers grouping yielded 0.11%.

Fears regarding the expenditure of households have particularly affected the title in August, the month in which DSG has declined 10% while the index of UK retailers has lost 6%.

Iliad Tuesday reported a significant improvement in profitability in the first half thanks to a quicker recovery than expected from its subsidiary, Alice, restructuring since it was bought 18 months ago.

The Internet service provider, which owns the brand Free, has published a net profit of 171.4 million euros, signing an improvement of 27% of its EBITDA in the first half to 391.6 million euros, including a contribution of 38 million Alice.

"I consider that today the financial recovery of Alice is finalized," said Thomas Reynaud, CFO of Iliad, in a telephone interview with Reuters.

The subsidiary, acquired in 2008 by Telecom Italia, showed a further erosion of its subscriber base in the first half of 2010, but various measures to cut costs have helped improve the profit.

"All the measures we have taken over the last 18 months are now paying on the repositioning of the offer, the increase in the rate unbundling (…), and we did play economies scale and synergies with Free, "said Thomas Reynaud.

Iliad has confirmed its financial and operational targets for short and medium term, which include free cash flow ADSL accumulated over 1.1 billion euros between 2010 and 2012, incorporating Alice, a growing "double digit" of Ebitda in 2010 and "a very strong increase in net profit" on the same period.

The group had already published in early August 1st half sales up 4.6% to 1.015 billion euros, reported in late June with a market share of 20% marks for his conquests Free, the number of subscribers totaled 3.9 million while.

ROAD TO THE MOBILE

Iliad, which is the pioneer offer "triple play" – phone, internet and television – about 30 euros in France, faces competition from increasingly strong in the area.

The French market has emerged in particular offer "quadruple play" – phone, internet, television and mobile – in May 2008 Bouygues Telecom and in August 2010 in the incumbent France Telecom, the market leader.

SFR, whose parent company Vivendi will publish its interim results on Wednesday 1 September, claimed the top spot in the first quarter in terms of winning new subscribers in the fixed (DSL), and although he has not launched a "quadruple play" the operator placed on cross-selling.

"I believe today that offers 'quadruple play' offers that are relatively expensive. If ultimately offers quadruple play should become the standard, we would be able to replicate these offers through our mobile license, "said Thomas Reynaud.

The project Free Mobile will see its first commercial offerings in the mobile appear in 2012, Iliad who won the fourth mobile license in France.

For now, the deployment of a mobile network takes place "under the roadmap" of the group, said its chief financial officer.

He also said that negotiations were continuing with the three groups of telecom competitors to sign a roaming agreement on their networks, enabling the new operator makes sense to market its first tender in 2012 before he deployed all his own antennas.

The Iliad as closed Monday down 0.56% to 69.50 euros. It yields about 16% since the beginning of the year, compared with a slight increase of 2% for the telecom sector index.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) has imposed Wednesday at Societe Generale fined 1.5 million pounds (1.9 million euros) for deficiencies in its reporting procedures.

The UK control of financial markets said in a statement the "seriousness" of the failings in the French bank in terms of reporting on financial transactions.

She adds that these failures have involved 80% of transactions that are subject to reporting, over a period of two years.

"We have cooperated fully with the FSA throughout their investigation," responded the SocGen said in a statement."We have taken all measures necessary to meet our future obligations for reporting on our dealings with the FSA.

The FSA said it is the sixth penalty for failure reporting it imposes a financial institution since August 2009.

The British bank Barclays, for example, in September 2009 sentenced to a fine of 2.45 million pounds for the same reasons. The German bank Commerzbank has been fined £ 595,000 last April.

The biotechnology company Allergan Inc. specializes in the manufacture of Botox is currently used to treat wrinkles, or breast implants could be a target for a major pharmaceutical company through a tender offer (OPA).

This probability has indeed risen sharply since last month and the presumed interest of the French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis U.S. for Genzyme.

The increasing use by the entire population of products manufactured by Allergan for cosmetic or aesthetic surgery and medicine is the main attraction of the U.S. laboratory.

Industry experts believe that the group, whose market capitalization is about $ 19.4 billion (15.3 billion), Sanofi could include interest in case of failure of negotiations in the acquisition of French Genzyme.

But the biotechnology company could also generate interest from other industry giants like Pfizer and Eli Lilly, which both seek to offset a drop in future revenues due to the expiration of their patents in coming years.

"ASSET VALUE OF EXTRAORDINARY"

"Allergan is clearly at the top of most lists (acquisitions) of large pharmaceutical companies and is considered an attractive target, it is a very valuable asset," said Ken Cacciatore, an analyst at Cowen and Co.

Analysts said Allergan could include permit Pfizer or Merck & Co to expand their portfolio of pharmaceutical products and increase their presence in emerging markets.

One analyst noted that Eli Lilly could be the one who had most to gain from the acquisition of Allergan.Especially Eli Lilly will lose patent number 2014, like those for its top-selling drug Zyprexa, which helps fight against schizophrenia, or the antidepressant Cymbalta.

According to Deutsche Bank, Eli Lilly profits could even drop to 35% by 2014.

Now at nearly 63 dollars per share, some analysts argue that the recovery Allergan remains undervalued and could rise steeply, especially if U.S. authorities approve the use of Botox as a treatment against migraine.

The approval could come as early as November and increase to at least 500 million dollars a year, sales of Botox, while the latter has already reached $ 1.4 billion.

Despite representing a ratio of 17.5 times earnings per share for the group hoped to 2011, when the multiple is only 9.9 for the large pharmaceuticals, Allergan's stock price could reach $ 90 in a analyst.
